When your Invisalign aligner fits well, it should sit closely around your teeth. If you notice a gap, a raised edge or an area that will not settle into place, one or more of your teeth may not be tracking as planned.
This does not always mean your treatment has failed. Your teeth do not all move at the same speed, and some movements are more complex than others. At Smile Design Boutique in Geneva, Switzerland, we encourage you to notice changes early and contact us for advice.
What does Invisalign tracking mean?
Tracking describes how closely your teeth follow the positions built into each aligner. Each tray represents a small stage in your treatment plan.
If your aligners are not tracking properly, you may notice a space near one tooth, an attachment that does not fit well or a tray that lifts when you speak.
Why might a tooth stop tracking?
You have not worn your aligners for long enough
Your Invisalign aligners usually need to be worn for around 20 to 22 hours each day. If you remove them for long periods, the steady pressure needed to guide your teeth is reduced. If this happens often, your teeth may fall behind the planned stage.
You should replace your aligners after eating or cleaning your teeth. We will give you a wear schedule, and you should follow it carefully without changing trays early.
Your aligner is not fully seated
Your tray may look as though it is in place while sitting slightly above one tooth. This reduces contact in the area that needs pressure.
You should insert each aligner carefully and press it into place with clean fingers. Only use a seating aid if we have advised you to do so.
Your tooth needs a difficult movement
Some tooth movements are less predictable with clear aligners. If you have a heavily rotated tooth, a short tooth or one that needs to move up or down, it may respond more slowly.
In some cases, your tooth may need more time, an attachment or an updated set of aligners. We will assess this and guide you accordingly.
An attachment has come loose
Attachments are small, tooth-coloured shapes placed on selected teeth to help your aligner grip and guide movement.
If one of your attachments falls off, your aligner may lose control over that tooth. Contact us if you think one is missing, and avoid trying to replace it yourself.
Your aligner is damaged or distorted
If your tray is cracked, bent or distorted, it may not apply pressure correctly. Hot water can also change the shape of your aligner.
Keep each tray in its case when not in use and clean it with cool or lukewarm water. Always follow the care instructions we provide.
Your teeth need more space
Sometimes, tight contact between your teeth can restrict movement. After assessing your bite and treatment plan, we may need to create a small amount of space between selected teeth.
What should you do if your Invisalign is not tracking?
You should continue wearing your current aligner unless we advise you otherwise. Do not move to the next tray early to try to force your teeth into position.
Check your wear time and look for cracks, distortion or a missing attachment. Make sure your aligner sits as closely as possible, but do not cut, bend or heat it.
Contact us if the gap remains for several days, becomes larger, or affects more than one tooth. You should also seek advice if your aligner will not fit or causes unusual pain.
Will you need to wear the same aligner for longer?
We may ask you to wear your current tray for a few extra days. This gives a slower-moving tooth more time to respond. You should not change your schedule without our advice.
If your teeth no longer match your original plan, we may take a new digital scan and prepare refinement aligners for you.
When refinements may help
Refinements are additional aligners that we create after reassessing your progress. They help us adjust movements that did not happen fully during your first series.
Needing refinements does not mean you have done anything wrong. Your teeth can respond differently from the digital prediction. A revised plan can improve your fit, bite and final tooth positions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change to the next aligner if one tooth is not tracking?
You should not change trays early unless we advise you to do so. Moving ahead may make the fit worse.
Does poor tracking mean Invisalign is not working?
Not always. Your tooth may need more time or better aligner seating. We may also need to replace an attachment or update your plan.
Can I fix an aligner gap myself?
You can check your wear time and make sure your tray is seated correctly. You should not cut, bend, heat or reshape your aligner yourself.
Will poor tracking make my treatment longer?
It may add time if your tooth needs extra wear or refinement aligners. Early assessment with us can often help limit any delay.
Keeping your treatment on course
At Smile Design Boutique in Geneva, Switzerland, we check how well your aligners fit and whether each of your teeth is moving as expected. Early checks allow us to adjust your treatment before later trays are affected.
You should wear your aligners as instructed, handle them carefully and attend your planned reviews. Contact us if something does not look or feel right rather than waiting for your next routine appointment.
