Can you switch from braces to Invisalign during treatment?

You may be able to switch from braces to Invisalign before completing your orthodontic treatment. However, the change is not suitable for every patient.

Before we recommend a switch, we need to assess how your teeth have moved, how your upper and lower teeth meet and which movements remain. We also need to confirm that Invisalign can complete those movements safely and predictably.

At Smile Design Boutique in Geneva, Switzerland, we plan any change carefully so that you can protect the progress you have already made.

Can you change from braces to Invisalign

In some cases, you can move from fixed braces to Invisalign aligners during treatment. Your suitability will depend on your current tooth positions and the work that still needs to take place.

Braces and Invisalign can both straighten your teeth, although the experience is quite different. Braces move your teeth with fixed brackets and wires, while Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that you can remove for meals and cleaning.

We will consider how far your teeth have already moved, which teeth still need correction, whether you require more bite changes, the health of your teeth and gums, whether aligners can provide enough control and whether you can follow the recommended wear schedule.

We would not remove your braces until we have confirmed that Invisalign provides a suitable way to continue your treatment.

Why you might want to switch

You may consider changing to Invisalign because you want a less noticeable treatment. Clear aligners can feel more discreet in professional, social and everyday settings.

You may also find it easier to clean your teeth without brackets and wires. Since you can remove Invisalign aligners, you can brush and floss your teeth more normally.

Some patients consider switching because brackets irritate their cheeks or lips. Others want to remove their braces for a wedding, work commitment or important event.

These concerns are understandable. However, your treatment result must remain the main priority. We need to make sure that changing systems will not affect the control, accuracy or stability of your treatment.

When switching may be possible

A switch may be more practical when braces have already completed the more complex stages of treatment.

For example, braces may have corrected significant crowding, rotations or bite concerns. Invisalign may then be able to manage the remaining alignment, spacing or finishing movements.

You may be suitable for a switch when your teeth have responded well to braces, the remaining movements are suitable for aligners, your bite has reached a stable stage, your teeth and gums are healthy, and you can wear your aligners as instructed.

Invisalign aligners usually need to remain in place for around 20 to 22 hours each day. You should remove them only for eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning your teeth.

Without consistent wear, your teeth may not progress as expected.

When braces may still be the better option

Continuing with braces may provide better control in some cases. This can be especially important when you still need complex tooth movements or significant bite correction.

It is completely reasonable to have these concerns. Even so, the most important thing is making sure your treatment remains on course. Before recommending a change, we need to be confident that switching will still give us the control needed to achieve a stable result.

Appearance is only one factor to consider. We will recommend the treatment that offers the best chance of achieving a healthy, stable and well-aligned smile.

How we assess whether you can switch

We begin by reviewing your current treatment progress.

We examine the position of each tooth and check how closely your treatment follows the original plan. We also assess how your upper and lower teeth meet.

Depending on your needs, we may take new photographs, digital scans or X-rays. These records help us understand the movements that remain.

We also check your gum health and look for signs of tooth decay, enamel damage or poor oral hygiene. Your teeth and gums should be healthy before you begin a new stage of orthodontic treatment.

We can then create a digital Invisalign plan to see whether aligners can complete the required movements.

What happens during the switch

If Invisalign is suitable, we will explain the process before making any changes.

First, we remove your brackets and wires carefully. We also remove the adhesive from your teeth and polish the enamel.

We then take a digital scan of your teeth. This scan allows us to design a new treatment plan based on your current tooth positions rather than where your teeth were before braces.

We will then arrange for your Invisalign aligners to be made. We may also place small, tooth-coloured attachments on selected teeth to help the aligners hold securely and guide specific movements.

We will explain how to wear, remove and clean your aligners. We will also schedule regular reviews to make sure your teeth continue moving as planned.

There may be a short period between removing your braces and receiving your aligners. We will plan this stage carefully and may provide a temporary appliance to help maintain your tooth positions.

Will switching affect your treatment time

Switching from braces to Invisalign may affect your treatment time, but the effect will vary from one patient to another.

Your overall timeline may remain similar if Invisalign can manage the remaining movements efficiently. However, the change may add time because we need to prepare a new treatment plan and wait for your aligners.

Treatment may also take longer if your teeth do not track as expected or if you do not wear your aligners consistently. You may need additional aligners, known as refinements, near the end of treatment.

After your assessment, we can give you a clearer estimate based on your teeth, bite and remaining treatment goals.

Does switching cost more

Switching treatment methods may involve extra costs.

These costs can relate to removing your braces, taking new scans and records, creating a digital Invisalign plan, manufacturing your aligners, placing attachments and providing further reviews or refinements.

The cost will depend on how much treatment remains and what your current orthodontic plan already covers.

We will explain the expected fees before you make a decision. This allows you to consider the clinical, practical and financial factors together.

Choosing the right treatment for the rest of your journey

You may be able to switch from braces to Invisalign, but the change requires a careful assessment. We need to confirm that aligners can complete your treatment without affecting your bite or final result.

For some patients, Invisalign provides a suitable and more discreet way to finish treatment. For others, continuing with braces remains the most predictable option.

At Smile Design Boutique in Geneva, Switzerland, we can assess your current progress and explain which approach may work best for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch to Invisalign halfway through braces treatment?

You may be able to switch halfway through treatment. We need to assess your current tooth positions, bite and remaining movements before confirming whether Invisalign is suitable.

Do my teeth need time to settle after braces are removed?

Your teeth can begin to move after your braces are removed. We will plan the transition carefully and may provide a temporary appliance while you wait for your aligners.

Will Invisalign complete the same treatment as my braces?

This depends on what your treatment still needs to achieve. Invisalign may manage many remaining movements, but braces may provide better control for some complex corrections.

Can I switch because my braces feel uncomfortable?

Discomfort may encourage you to consider a switch, but it does not confirm that Invisalign is suitable. We can also check your braces and make adjustments to reduce irritation.

Will I need attachments after switching to Invisalign?

You may need tooth-coloured attachments to help the aligners guide specific movements. The number and position of the attachments will depend on your treatment plan.

Can I return to braces if Invisalign does not work for me?

Further treatment options will depend on why your teeth are not progressing as planned. Wearing your aligners consistently and attending regular reviews can help reduce the risk of delays.
